Donchian Channel strategy
The Donchian Channel, named after trend-following pioneer Richard Donchian, is one of the simplest indicators in technical analysis: it draws an upper line at the highest high and a lower line at the lowest low over a lookback window. The channel itself just maps the recent range — it becomes a strategy when you trade the break of its edges, which is how it runs on this site. It is famous as the backbone of the Turtle Trading system, which makes it worth testing honestly rather than taking on reputation.
An illustration of where the rule triggers — not real prices, and not a signal to act. The dashed forks mean the outcome is undetermined; whether the rule made money is what a backtest measures.
How it works
- • Upper band — the highest high over the lookback window (classically 20 periods) — a push above it marks a new breakout high.
- • Lower band — the lowest low over the window — price breaking below it marks the opposite extreme.
- • Entry — go long when price closes above the upper band — the breakout signal the channel is built to catch.
- • Exit — leave on a break of the lower (or a shorter) band; being a breakout rule, it enters late and gives some of the move back at the turn.
On this site, Donchian Channel is run as the Donchian breakout. See honestly how that approach performed across every famous stock and coin — costs on, no look-ahead, measured against simply buying and holding, with the losses shown.
The honest caveat
A channel breakout only pays when a real trend follows the break. In steady bull runs it often lags simply holding — it sits out of the market until a breakout confirms, and in choppy ranges the bands get pierced repeatedly and whipsaw. Like most mechanical rules, the channel breakout does not beat buy & hold on most assets; the honest value is finding the specific cases where it did, and never assuming a famous indicator means a live edge. Test it before you trust it.
